Paratus Namibia celebrated its 20th anniversary with the launch of its nationwide mobile network.

The development marks a milestone in the country's telecommunications landscape.

As part of its achievements, the telecommunications company says they have been active in the education sector for the past seven years, working on initiatives to improve access to the internet in schools, especially those in remote areas.

Through these projects, the company connected over 12,000 learners to digital resources and also empowered more than 500 teachers.

Paratus Group Executive Chairman Barney Harmse reflected on the company's 20-year journey.

"Our status from here is that we can call Namibia home. It is the centre of our universe, and then we expand it to Africa. But we actually started expanding into Africa in one way. But we are all doing that with our accomplishments so far. And why I said "so far" is because we started a lot of new things."

Since 2018, the company has invested over N$1.417 billion in infrastructure, strengthening network capacity, coverage and future-readiness.

The just-launched mobile network is backed by a N$600 million investment and has thus far delivered coverage to 50 towns and 80 communities, with a focus on east-west and Windhoek-Oshakati routes.

The mobile network is the first of its kind in the country, exclusively utilising 4G technology instead of the outdated 2G or 3G systems.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus applauded Paratus's achievements and contributions over the years.

Paratus provides connectivity services to more than 20 African countries and, in partnership with other entities, has committed to continuing to boost internet connectivity to schools in rural areas.
