The National Council Standing Committee on Home Affairs, Security, Constitutional and Legal Affairs has urged ministries and agencies operating at the Wakashamane Border Post to work together to solve challenges facing staff there.

The committee's chairperson, Philemon Ndjambula, made this call while visiting the border post in the Okalongo Constituency in the Omusati Region.

Ndjambula visited the border as a follow-up on the implementation of recommendations made to improve infrastructure and human capital at the borders.

The recommendations were made in 2022 and forwarded to relevant ministries and agencies responsible for border management and controls for implementation.

Upon arriving in the region, the committee paid a brief courtesy call to Governor Immanuel Shikongo, who welcomed them, saying, "We are at your disposal; we will provide all the information that may be required from us, but also, we will be able to give feedback on issues that we feel need the attention of all of us."

At the border post, an inspection was made, and officials from the police indicated that a lack of vehicles hampers their operations.

They also pointed out a lack of housing facilities, office space, proper cordon structures along the borderline and CCTV technologies that were affected, making it difficult to control cross-border activities.

"I observed that there is no real coordination between the line ministries and the agencies that are operating at the border. We have recommended that ministries and agencies operating at the border should join together so that they can share all the resources to make it easy for the border officials to manage the border," said Ndjambula.

The Committee's Vice Chairperson, Andreas Amundjindi, assured that the committee will seek clarification from the executives on why some of the recommendations have not been fully implemented.

"From this point, we will meet with the executive to discuss our review of the recommendations we previously forwarded to you, noting that some were not implemented; we would like to understand the reasons for their non-implementation."
