The National Assembly has unanimously adopted a motion calling on the United States of America to lift its long-standing economic, financial and commercial blockade against Cuba and remove the Caribbean nation from the list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism.

The motion, tabled by Swapo Party MP Dr. Tobie Aupindi, drew attention to the continued impact of the 63-year-old embargo, which has caused Cuba trillions of dollars in economic losses and an estimated $3.6 billion in annual losses to the U.S. economy.

Following the adoption of the motion, Dr. Aupindi emphasised Namibia’s non-aligned foreign policy stance under Article 96 of the Constitution, noting that disputes between two countries should not escalate into global conflicts. He highlighted that the motion reflects parliament’s commitment to standing up for human rights, human dignity and human endeavour.
