The Speaker of the Zambian Parliament, Nelly Mutti, has declared late Edgar Lungu's daughter Tasila's parliamentary seat vacant.

Lungu, an elected MP for Chawama Constituency, has been missing sittings since her father died in South Africa.

She joined politics in 2016 when her father was President of Zambia.

That year, she stood and won as a councillor for a ward within the same Chawama.

In 2021, she upgraded to a parliamentary seat when she won as a member of Parliament under the Patriotic Front.

Since then, she has been representing the people of Chawama in the National Assembly for a 5-year term ending in August 2026.

However, since 5 June 2025, when she announced the death of her father in South Africa, she had not stepped on the precincts of Parliament.

The family has been at loggerheads with the Zambian government over the late Lungu's burial rites.

With uncertainty over the burial, the standing orders of Parliament mandate the Speaker of the National Assembly to declare the seat vacant, and an election to replace her will be held within 90 days.
