Family spokesperson for the late Edgar Lungu, Makebi Zulu, has survived a road traffic accident while on a campaign trail to take over leadership of the Patriotic Front (PF) that was led by the late former President of Zambia.

Along with the other two close allies of the family, Chanda Kabwe and Richard Musukwa, who until recently were in South Africa, were rushed to the Kasama General Hospital, where they have been attended to and are all in a stable condition.

The accident involving the trio occurred about 800 kilometres north of Lusaka as the driver was avoiding hitting a cyclist.

Zulu, the family spokesperson and lawyer for the Lungu family, along with Musukwa, late Lungu's brother-in-law, and former minister Chanda Kabwe left South Africa for Zambia after the protracted burial arrangements.

They came to Zambia to launch a campaign for Makebi Zulu to take over the presidency of the Patriotic Front, a party that the late Lungu led.

They had been in South Africa from the time Lungu died in June.

The trio are reported to have been rushing to attend the funeral of the Mayor of Kasama, a senior party member who died last Friday.

Makebi Zulu faces more than 8 other contenders who have expressed interest in taking over the party leadership in readiness for the upcoming Zambia general elections slated for August 2026.

The trio has been going round the country to seek support from the party structures.

The Party's general conference was earlier set for last month's end but could not take place due to intra-party legal issues that are currently underway in several courts of legitimate issues.
