In Zambia, a controversial constitutional amendment Bill, number 7 of 2025, passed both the 2nd and 3rd readings with almost 100% votes.
When the Bill came up for the 2nd reading on Monday, 131 members voted in favour, while only two voted against it.
Subsequently the Bill went for the third reading and amassed all the 135 votes of the members present.
This ignited celebrations, particularly from the members of the House, including those from opposition political parties that opposed the Bill on its initiation process.
These celebrations, however, have been condemned by some sections because the Speaker of the National Assembly personally participated.
The Bill now awaits the President to pass it into law.
The Bill seeks to increase the number of parliamentary seats by way of delimitation, among 13 other clauses.
It also seeks to introduce a mixed member proportional representation by introducing reserved seats for women, youths and the disabled.
Some civil society organisations, including some church mother bodies, had opposed the Bill, largely because of the way it was introduced
