The City of Lusaka, Zambia's capital, has run out of burial space and is now seeking private landowners to partner with or sell their land.

Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba disclosed that there have been 17,717 deaths in the city since January this year.

"Lusaka City Council would like to appeal to members of the public who may have titled land and would like to partner with the LCC to run cemeteries, as we have a shortfall of burial sites. So all are welcome to partner or to sell land to us."

This initiative aims to increase burial site availability in the city and ensure dignified, sanitary burials.

By working with residents and private cemetery operators, the council aims to sustainably meet the city's burial needs.

The LCC's efforts to regulate burial practices and address inadequate burial sites are expected to positively impact public health and safety.
