Oshana police have arrested two suspects in connection with a housebreaking at Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango's residence during the recent festive season.
The incident occurred at Hango's house in Oshakati East while he was on vacation. A security officer was reportedly guarding the house at the time of the break-in.
The items stolen are estimated to be worth more than N$800,000. Among them was a Toyota Land Cruiser, which the suspects allegedly used to load and transport the stolen goods from the mayor's residence.
Police allege the suspects later drove away in the Land Cruiser and began selling stolen items on the streets.
One of the two suspects was apprehended at Onghumbula village in the Oshikoto Region, while the other was arrested in villages near Ongwediva in the Oshana Region.
Police also recovered a 9mm pistol, believed to be among the stolen items, at Okaandje village. Additional recovered items include pairs of shoes and a cellphone.
Investigations continue.
