Small-scale farmers at Lake Lyambezi in the Muyako area of the Zambezi Region are concerned about their harvests due to a locust infestation.

Leonard Saboi said that although some crops remain healthy, farmers fear the rapid pace at which locusts are devouring them. He highlighted additional threats from wild animals, including rats that could eat seeds before germination, for those who are planting now.

Saboi urged the Ministry of Agriculture to provide chemicals and training on locust spraying, warning that delays could reduce yields significantly.

He also called on the Salambala Conservancy to intervene, as hippos travel over 5 km from water to farms.

Saboi emphasised the region's role as a food basket, vital for family sustenance.
