The United Nations will continue its work in line with its mandate despite the United States' withdrawal from several agencies, a decision the organisation has described as regrettable.

The remarks were made by the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric in response to the Trump administration's announcement that the U.S would withdraw from 66 international organisations.

Of the 66 bodies, 31 are UN agencies, many of which rely heavily on funding from member states to carry out their operations.

The Trump administration says the decision to withdraw was based on concerns over what it described as wasteful spending.

The UN Secretariat says it has not received any formal communication from the U.S. government beyond the announcement posted on the White House website earlier this week.

However, Dujarric told the UN press corps that the organisation's entities would continue implementing the programmes entrusted to them.

“Whether it's on climate, whether it's on protection of children against violence, on gender issues, we continue our work with determination.”

The US withdrawal is expected to affect financing for the affected agencies.
