Parents in the Khomas Region flocked to the Teachers’ Resource Centre on the first day of school for 2026, seeking placement for their children.

NBC News spoke to parents about their concerns. Safe Kauhonina said, “It’s the beginning of the new year, and there is no place for learners at some secondary schools, so we came here to apply for schools.”

Elizabeth Wedinge, a guardian, expressed frustration: “Most parents are really angry because the Minister of Education is failing their children. The ministry sent parents to the Teachers’ Resource Centre, which offers no information on what to do. Parents are asking for Grades 1 and 2, up to Grade 7. They do not have school places. Some parents were transferred to Windhoek, but they are not being assisted.”

Edson McLeod added, “I went to all the schools I could, but they said we should come here. It seems like chaos; they don’t have control of anything. We are wasting money on taxis going up and down to schools.”

Responding to the concerns, Ministry of Education Executive Director Edda Bohn assured parents, “I would like to assure all parents who have not yet received placement for their children, especially those gathered at the Teachers’ Resource Centre in the Khomas Region, that the ministry will make space available. Please register your name and your child’s name at the required venue.”

Education officials reiterated that placement procedures are ongoing and encouraged parents to follow official channels for updates.
