The City of Windhoek is warning the public to be vigilant about fake house rental scams targeting residents for accommodation.

The municipality says scammers are posing as landlords or property agents and advertising houses that are either not available or do not belong to them.

The City Police's Spokesperson, Marcelline Murapo, is urging residents to always insist on viewing a property in person before making any payment.

"Try to meet the landlord or property manager in person. This helps verify the identity and gives you a chance to ask questions about the property. Request copies of the property's title deed and the property owner's identification documents to ensure they have the right to rent out the property. Never pay a deposit or any fees before signing a lease and confirming the property's legitimacy. Be wary of apparent property owners asking for payment through untraceable methods like electronic wallets or cash."

Members of the public who suspect fraudulent activity are encouraged to report such cases to the nearest police station or to the City of Windhoek.
