The regional councillor of the ǃNamiǂNûs Constituency, Suzan Ndjaleka, has called for the immediate installation of speed humps on a section of the B4 road that runs through Aus settlement.
Councillor Ndjaleka said the call for the speed-reduction measure is aimed at mitigating accidents along the section of the highway that runs through Aus Settlement in the ||Kharas Region.
The section of the road, she noted, has become an accident-prone area due to speeding trucks transporting manganese.
According to her, several accidents have been previously reported, with the most recent occurring Sunday when a truck and a pickup vehicle collided.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
“We are calling for an urgent action to bring safety humps on that road. It is also questionable whether our SOEs really carry out their mandate when it comes to grassroots and community concerns. We are looking forward to this action as soon as possible. One life lost is a loss to the nation. Fortunately, nobody got injured yesterday morning. But the pictures of those vehicles are not acceptable. So, Roads Authority, come on board within the next two months; I suppose we need those speed humps there.”
Approached for comment, Roads Authority's spokesperson Hileni Fillemon said consultations are currently underway to find a solution to the issue.
She noted the parastatal's leadership has reached out to the councillor to address the issue as a matter of urgency.
