The Otjozondjupa Education Director Gerhard Ndafenongo is calling on schools in the region to reinstate the practice of hand washing.

The health directorate had recorded 32 cases of cholera by the 12th of January.

With the unfortunate outbreak of cholera in Grootfontein last month, the health authority says it is of utmost importance that schools practise good hygiene at all times.

"Schools, especially in Grootfontein, take precautionary measures and reinstate the wash protocol. The protocol is water, sanitation and hygiene; we install the handwashing facilities at the school, and we make sure that the ablution facilities are functional and that they are clean, and also that the food handling, be it lunch boxes from home or food being prepared at school, be it the hostel or this feeding programme that will provide to learners, that these things are prepared with complete hygiene."

Those involved in food preparation, the Director says, must be healthy.

He further called for better cooperation between parents and the schools towards more effective hygiene practices.
