Aerial operations continued for a fifth straight day on Wednesday to battle wildfires sweeping through the Franschhoek Valley in South Africa's Cape Winelands.

Footage shows the view of the flames from a helicopter, as aircraft were deployed to douse the fires. Ground crews could also be seen assisting as thick smoke blanketed the region.

The blaze broke out on Saturday and has since swept across much of Franschhoek Valley. Efforts to control the blaze have been hampered by strong wind gusts up to 80 kilometres per hour, according to reports.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality's (CWDM) Fire Services said on Wednesday that multiple fire lines are still burning in the mountains above Franschhoek and have caused significant challenges for personnel under hazardous conditions.

Wildfires spreading across the Cape Winelands over the past month have severely damaged vineyards, forced the closure of local trails, and put residents on alert for possible evacuation if conditions worsen.
