The Gobabis Town Council has elected a new deputy mayor, seven months after the position became vacant.

This follows the expulsion of former deputy mayor Dina Fillemon from A Right to Shelter Foundation.

Two candidates were in the running for the deputy mayor position: Swapo Party's Doreen Indongo and Right to Shelter Foundation Wynand Lukas.

Indongo secured four votes, while Lukas received three.

Indongo said she is looking forward in serving the town and its residents and encourages young people to support the council and enroll in the various programmes available to them.

“Proud to be here to serve my community, work with transparency, and take accountability for everything in this chamber as Deputy Chair. I also want to encourage the youth to stand behind us as we work to change our town. The youth have many programmes available to them, and we want them to participate in them. We want them to be present and heard. I am here to represent us all.”
