The Director General of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Stanley Similo, has described Phase Two of the Mukorob Film Project as a major contribution to the growth of the creative industry.

The second phase of the project, for which selections officially began today, will see creatives commissioned to develop and produce original scripts.

In the first phase, the local film production project selected 13 producers from 200 submissions.

Similo highlighted the creative industry's need for such support, noting that the NBC established a permanent commissioning structure with dedicated funding, especially under the new eighth administration's emphasis on the sector.

This, he said, marks a meaningful step to ignite ideas, amplify voices, and bring Namibian stories to screens.

The second phase, Similo noted, also aligns with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's commitment to keeping the creative arts relevant and vibrant, stressing discipline, originality, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism from participants.

"And what is important is that Mukorob phase two is not just a production initiative; it is a serious statement of intent. It signals our deliberate commitment to local storytelling at the level where we are saying Namibians must be heard, they must be seen, and their stories must be there."

The Director General noted that Mukorob production will challenge writers and creators, test directors and producers and ultimately assess NBC's capacity to deliver.

"Our audience, we take them seriously. They are diverse. They deserve content that will directly speak to and respect their intelligence and mirror their lives in the way we're carrying them out on a daily basis. Most probably their struggles, their triumphs, and their aspirations as well. So we hope to be able to tell authentic Namibian stories that will really make sure that the mandate of the NBC in its broader sense is given the respect that it deserves."

Commissioning Editor Glendyrr Bailey said, "It's about growing our industry. We're helping emerging talent develop professional scripts, encouraging originality, and creating content that resonates with local audiences while meeting high production standards.  Every story we select contributes to a sustainable, vibrant Namibian media landscape."

Scriptwriters face strong guiding principles in this process of producing relatable content.

For the NBC, this means investing in storytellers and prioritising authentic narratives, ensuring Namibia's storytelling future remains bright, genuine, and impactful.
