The Minister of Justice and Labour Relations, Wise Immanuel, told Parliament that a group of employees assigned to Walu Fishing have not received their salaries since October last year.

"The group that has not gotten the salary, the salary for January, is the group that was allocated to the WALU fishing company, and in actual fact, that problem has not only been for January; it has been since October last year. From October last year to November and December, they had not gotten a salary from the company that they were allocated to. As a result of that, a conversation took place between myself as well as the minister, the sector minister, and the minister responsible for fishery. An alternative was found for the salary to be paid for October, November and December."

The minister did not specify exactly when the salaries would be paid.

He, however, said they want to ensure that quotas under the redress programme are allocated after they have a comprehensive understanding of what is happening within the fishing sector.

The minister added that another issue under review is companies being allocated quotas without having jobs to offer, possibly due to misrepresentation, and noted that full details will only be available once the auditing process is complete.
