The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAFWLR) is stepping up measures to prevent corruption in Namibia's fisheries sector and advocating for tight controls and transparency.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says secrecy and lack of transparency in the fisheries sector have made corruption harder to detect.
It is now calling for greater disclosure of fishing rights, quotas and licence holders.

Discussions between President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and role players in the fishing industry have confirmed that the sector is unstable and facing a difficult transition.

Namibia's fishing industry, one of the biggest contributors to the economy, is heading into a transition.

The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) has taken its awareness campaign to Omaheke, one of the least fish-consuming regions.

The trust took its education awareness to Chief Hosea Kutako Primary School in Aminius.

The Minister of Justice and Labour Relations, Wise Immanuel, told Parliament that a group of employees assigned to Walu Fishing have not received their salaries since October last year.

Namibia has introduced the National Coordination Mechanism on Decent Work in the fisheries sector.

The mechanism is a body that will ensure that there is social and labour compliance in the fishing industry.

President Nangolo Mbumba says the promotion of Namibianization is progressing well in the fisheries sector. 

He revealed that, to date, 90% of fishing rights are owned by Namibians, and the sector employs about 18,000 Namibians.
