The Namibian government has approved a series of policy decisions aimed at strengthening human rights, international cooperation, and economic development.
Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus delivered the latest Cabinet briefing.
Cabinet has approved Namibia's national report to the Universal Periodic Review, a global human rights review carried out by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The report explains government programmes aimed at improving housing, providing subsidised higher education, and fighting violence against women.
The Universal Periodic Review is a mechanism of the United Nations that evaluates the human-rights record of member states every four and a half years.
Other resolutions are "Cabinet took note of the report and directed the following OMAS to take responsibility as reflected below. The Minister of International Relations and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, and the Ministry of Industries and Mines and Energy. The first Cabinet decision is an MOU on political and diplomatic consultation between the Republic of Namibia and the Republic of Congo. Cabinet approved the signing of the MOU on political and diplomatic consultations between these two countries. The next cabinet decision is a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports of the Kingdom of Spain in the field of sports and physical education."
Cabinet also endorsed the Commonwealth Draft and the Nadi Declaration on Democratic Resilience and Participation, following the Justice Minister's attendance at a meeting in Fiji.
The meeting aimed to promote the rule of law, good governance, and democratic participation throughout the Commonwealth of Nations.
Cabinet also instructed different ministries to carry out cooperation plans in areas such as trade, agriculture, infrastructure, and investment development.
It further approved multiple memoranda of understanding aimed at expanding diplomatic and educational cooperation.
These are agreements with the Republic of Congo on political consultations, the Kingdom of Spain on sports development, and the Republic of Malta on research and innovation.
Another agreement with Hungary will provide up to ten annual scholarships for Namibian students between 2026 and 2028.
Cabinet also approved the annual report of the Namibia National Reinsurance Corporation, which recorded income growth from N$762 million in 2023 to N$830 million in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Namibia Wildlife Resorts reported improved performance, with revenue rising to N$448.8 million during the same period.
