The Kavango East Governor's office has donated a decent shelter to a destitute family in Fumbe Village in the Mashare Constituency.
The governor's office deemed it necessary to provide the family with shelter from the harsh weather conditions.
"When we heard about it, the governor's office received phone calls for assistance, so I came to see the family, and what I found was not good. We could not construct a thatch house, though, so we opted for zinc, which can at least last longer," said Governor Hamunyera Hambykua.
Eighty-one-year-old Kapango Semete survives on government social grants, as do her daughter, Maria Semete, and seven grandchildren.
They moved from Muroro Village along the Kavango River to Fumbe Village to pursue crop farming.
After Kapango became ill, which resulted in her losing her fingers, she discontinued farming.
In 2024, a fire also destroyed her house. She could not reconstruct it, and for the past two years, Semete lived in a half-constructed thatch house.
"I really feel grateful. I am happy and truly grateful. Thank you very much," said Semete.
Semete received national documents and registered for the old age grant with the help of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare.
The ministry is now in the process of assisting Semete's seven grandchildren to obtain national documents to allow them to benefit from social grants.
The office of the governor will still see to it that the family gets furniture.
