The Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAFWLR), Romeo Muyunda, says they have commenced with the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) awareness campaign in targeted regions.
Speaking on the Namibia Connects programme, Muyunda says the awareness campaign is aimed at preparing farmers along the targeted areas to collaborate with the Ministry to combat the spread of FMD and to inform farmers on preventative measures in place.
"So to ensure preparedness, we have initiated this awareness campaign so we engage the stakeholders, and these stakeholders are your farmers, especially in the regions that are targeted, and we ensure that we have collaboration on how we deal with this imminent threat."
Muyunda mentioned the targeted regions bordering the south of the veterinary cordon fence.
"These are regions such as parts of Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa, Kunene, ||Kharas, Hardap, Khomas and Omaheke. So this, like I have mentioned, is very important, especially in terms of their contribution to our agriculture and meat industry."
He said that since FMD is a highly contagious illness, the numerous cases that have been reported in bordering countries, South Africa and Botswana, should be viewed as an immediate threat to Namibia's agriculture industry.
