The country's defence budget vote, amounting to N$7.5 billion, has been approved in the National Assembly and will now be reviewed by the National Council.
As discussions commenced on the committee stage, MPs called for the ministry to improve military capacity to better safeguard the sovereignty of the country.
Among the main concerns raised by MPs regarding the sector was the outdated military equipment as well as vehicles, vessels and aircraft.
MPs also questioned the drone and missile capabilities in the defence sector.
Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi, says the ministry is geared towards modernisation and is doing its best to equip the defence force despite financial constraints.
"We are not sitting just doing nothing. You are talking about attack helicopters. You want this? Yes. It is nice to want. It is nice to have. It is good to have these things. But we are a small nation. And our military posture must be commensurate with our ability to be where we are. We cannot just have a posture that is beyond our capabilities."
