Dr. Alpo Mbamba Senior Secondary School in Rundu has launched a media hub programme.
The hub intends to address youth empowerment, job creation through the creative industries and the development of a knowledge-based economy driven by local content.
Speaking to the MICT team, the school principal, Elizabeth Lucian, noted that the school is one of a few in the region that offers Integrated Performing Arts as a formal subject within the national curriculum.
"Arts are not taken seriously, but for us, we want to empower our youth, our young ones, to see the potential in the arts. Whether it is music, journalism, or content creation, we are exposing our learners to the understanding that there is a market for the arts."
Lucian further acknowledged the National Arts Council of Namibia for donating equipment worth N$60,000 and recognising the school's potential to become a hub for creative excellence in the Kavango East Region.
She further highlighted that one of the challenges the school is facing is the lack of a larger IPA infrastructure that could accommodate more learners.
The school was established in the year 2000 and has 806 learners from grades 8 to 11.
The school has showcased remarkable talent in the creative arts, triumphing in the Anti-Corruption Commission song competition, where it competed against 55 schools from all 14 regions.
