Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare praised the Lüderitz community—the Buchters—for their resilience and unity during the opening of the 19th annual Lüderitz Crayfish Festival. He emphasised that development and innovation flourish when communities support their leaders despite differences.
“Let us see meaningful and practical unity at Hoachanas, Gibeon, Amperboe, Blaauwes, Berseba, Valgras, Bethanie, Warmbad. If unity manifests there like the resilience of the Buchters who can see through the wind, no matter how it blows, many heritage innovations can be realised,” he said.
Minister of Agriculture Inge Zaamwani highlighted the vital role fishing companies play in Lüderitz’s economic growth:
“The people of Lüderitz have shown that when communities unite behind a shared vision, progress becomes possible.”
The Lüderitz Mayor noted the festival’s growth from humble beginnings to a major event drawing thousands and supporting hundreds of families.
The festival will run until 4 May.
