Truck congestion at Martin’s Drift border post between Botswana and South Africa has reached record levels, escalating into a humanitarian crisis, according to Trans-Kalahari Corridor Secretariat Executive Director Leslie Mpofu.

“This surge is driven by rising fuel costs, making these ports preferred due to shorter routes and affordable fuel in Botswana. The situation is severe and escalating,” Mpofu said.

Botswana authorities are encouraging haulage drivers to use alternative entry points. Transport operators and drivers are urged to cooperate with border authorities and adhere to protocols.

Traders are advised to pre-lodge declarations to avoid excessive congestion, which now stretches nearly seven kilometers at Martin’s Drift.
