The Global Water Partnership Organisation (GWPO) is working to mobilise up to N$15 billion in water investments.

GWPO Chief Executive Officer of Alex Simalabwi said the initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Namibian government and other countries as part of broader plans to strengthen water security and support development.

Namibia signed an agreement to host the GWPO Secretariat in Windhoek.

The organisation, which has been in existence for three decades, aims to assist governments around the world in dealing with water challenges through integrated resource management.

"Namibia is, of course, fortunate in my view because now it's going to give the opportunity for the country to show global leadership around water, making sure that Namibia and Windhoek in particular become the global political capital, the diplomatic capital for water investments, by hosting this organisation."

In an update, Simalabwi said the organisation will be working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform. NamWater and the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) to mobilise investments for climate change.

He also praised President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for her dedication to resolving Namibia's water issue.

This strategic move establishes Namibia as a hub for global water governance and marks the first intergovernmental water organisation anchored in the Global South.
