Decline in HIV/AIDS funding stalls progress

Efforts to achieve the goal of ending AIDS by 2030 are stalling due to an increase in new infections in some global regions.

Additionally, there exists a substantial annual funding gap of US$9.5 billion for the global HIV response to boost resources.

This was revealed during the launch of the UNAIDS report under the theme "The Urgency of Now: AIDS at a Crossroads."

In 2023, global funding for HIV saw a decrease, with total resources amounting to US$19.8 billion, marking a 5% drop from the previous year. 

NSFAF funding policy up for review

The Namibian Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) and its funding policy are up for review.

The Minister of Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi, stated that the review is aimed at accommodating students who were declined financial assistance on the basis of the income of their parents.

More funds needed for Helao Nafidi Private Hospital

More funds are still needed to build the envisaged Helao Nafidi Private Hospital at Onhuno in the Ohangwena Region.

The private hospital, launched in October 2022, is planned to be a fully registered proprietary limited company.

The feasibility study of the envisaged Helao Nafidi Private Hospital has already been completed and approved by the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

Eduaction key to preparing learners for green hydrogen opportunities

Education is the key to accessing opportunities for development presented by both the Namibian government and through the country's natural resources.

This was said by Swapo Party member Verna Sinimbo at Sifuha Village in the Zambezi Region.

Addressing community members at Sinufa village as the political leader assigned to the Kabbe North district in the Zambezi Region, Sinimbo underlined the importance of education in preparing children to take advantage of opportunities in the fields, especially green hydrogen, and the oil and gas industry in Namibia.

Number of State patients requiring funding increases

The number of state patients requiring funding from the Ministry of Health and Social Services has increased drastically over the years.

This fund, which was established to assist state patients who are unable to afford private health care, was allotted about N$57 million for the 2023/2024 financial year.

The Special Fund for the Treatment of Unusual Illnesses was established in 2012 to fund state patients with rare conditions, ailments, or illnesses that cannot be treated in public hospitals or in Namibia.

Film industry in need of Funding

Funding has always been a challenge for the film industry's growth, and corporations reluctance to fund has stiffened the film industry.

The veteran film makers say producing a film is costly and that the Namibian Film Commission's annual budget is not even close to the amount needed to produce one. Vickson Hangula, a Namibian veteran filmmaker, urged the private sector to re-consider investment in the industry as it has huge potential to tackle the unemployment rate in the country. 

Several SOEs reiterate commitment to finance agricultural activities to ensure food security

Several State Owned Enterprises reiterated their commitment to finance agricultural activities to ensure food security in the country.

The commitments were made by the Agribank, DBN and the Environment Investment Fund at a three-day workshop on food security in Windhoek.

Under the Malabo and Maputo declarations, African governments are expected to spend at least 10 percent of their national budgets on the agriculture sector.

Khomas Regional Council to assist vulnerable, disabled learners with funding for their studies

The Khomas Regional Council will assist vulnerable and disabled learners with funding for their studies.

This follows a motion tabled by Khomasdal Constituency Councillor Samuel Angolo, which calls for the building of more classrooms in the Otjomuise suburb to accommodate more learners at Wesmont High School.

At the council meeting, Katutura East Constituency Councillor Richard !Gaoseb stressed the need to assist these needy students.
