Swakop Uranium Chief Executive Officer Luo Wei hailed the work of the media in light of the World Press Freedom Day celebration.
He said the media remains a critical partner in promoting transparency, accountability and informed public dialogue within the mining sector.
Speaking during a media engagement at the mine, Wei said responsible mining goes beyond production and profits but also includes hosting communication, environmental protection and meaningful contributions to national development.
Wei noted that as operations of the Husab Mine, one of Namibia's largest mining operations, the company recognises the responsibility that comes with its scale.
He says the company remains committed to open engagements with the media and the public by providing factual and timely information about its operations and impact.
"As a company with strong local roots, we see ourselves as part of Namibia's long-term development. Our role, in addition to operating a mine, is to contribute meaningfully to the Namibian economy and to society. This includes creating employment, supporting local businesses through procurement, and investing in skills development so that Namibians can grow alongside the industry. At the same time, we are fully aware that our operations must be conducted responsibly and sustainably. Environmental protection is a fundamental part of our work. We operate under strict regulatory requirements and continuously seek to improve our efficiency and reduce our impact."
He further highlighted the company's contribution to Namibia's economy through employment creation, local procurement and skills development aimed at empowering Namibians within the mining industry.
Environmental sustainability also remains a priority, particularly in a water-scarce country like Namibia.
Wei says the company is working with NamWater on the development of the SUNAM desalination plant to strengthen long-term water security through sustainable infrastructure.
He also pointed to community development initiatives such as the Hope Farm and Invest in Education programmes, which focus on education, livelihoods and community well-being.
As Swakop Uranium prepares to mark ten years since its first production, Wei says the company remains focused on responsible mining and creating lasting value for Namibia's future.
