The mayor of Keetmanshoop, Francis Swartbooi, has accused a state witness of discussing details relating to her drinking and driving case while still under oath.
She made the assertions during the continuation of her trial in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate's Court.
During cross-examination of state witness Sergeant Kenneth Sanzila, Swartbooi maintained state witnesses discussed discrepancies relating to an alcohol breathalyser device's calibration in a WhatsApp group.
She questioned Sanzila whether he was aware of the WhatsApp conversation.
But the state objected, arguing the question is being put to the wrong person and has no relevance.
It added the accused was supposed to have put the question to state witness Inspector Lukas Jonas during his cross-examination but had failed to do so.
When asked by Magistrate Mulonda Masuku about her intention with the WhatsApp chat, Swartbooi responded that witnesses discussed the matter while under oath.
Masuku said the court noted the accused's accusations as well as the state's objection.
He adjourned the matter until 16 July for the court to research the issue relating to the WhatsApp conversation claims.
The mayor pleaded not guilty to the 'drink and drive' charge at the start of her trial, following her arrest and court appearance in January 2023.
