The Otjozondjupa Regional Council has resolved to update a database of unemployed and skilled persons to absorb some into government projects undertaken in the region.

The move follows a recent community demonstration at the Kalkfeld settlement where they demanded jobs and better services.

According to Otjozondjupa Regional Council Chairperson Paulus Nekundi, a meeting with stakeholders resolved to update the unemployed and skilled persons database so those listed can be employed in entry-level positions on a temporary basis.

Currently, only the 200-kilometre railway line upgrading and rehabilitation project is underway at the settlement, where residents claimed many were overlooked for job opportunities.

"What we discussed today was mostly pertaining to the recruitment. So we discuss in depth. We came to a conclusion where we found that there is a certain database. - There was an issue with the database at the settlement office, which was not updated, and then we found consensus that this be updated as a matter of urgency, for which the community members will also assist."

On the issue of service delivery, development and Kalkfeld status from settlement to village council, Nekundi says the council will undertake public engagements with the community soon.

Currently we are busy putting up a programme for engagement meetings, and we will provide that information that they need from those petitions, especially like the village council, on how long they can still remain a settlement. that information we have; therefore, you see the Regional Council is very committed to addressing those issues that might prevent the settlement from becoming a village council, especially water reticulation, sewerage systems and others, because of some of the issues that we are addressing in those two-three years."

The cutting off of water at the settlement has also been resolved.
