The Namibia National Olympic Committee has announced a 39-member delegation for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, taking place from 23 July to 2 August, with several notable athletes absent from the team selected to represent the country.
At a press conference held at the Namibian Cricket Ground, the Committee officially unveiled Team Namibia. The delegation consists of 23 athletes—comprising 15 men and eight women—who will be supported by coaches, managers, medical personnel, technical officials, and administrators to bring the total delegation to 39 members.
Namibian athletes are set to compete across six sporting codes: athletics, para-athletics, boxing, gymnastics, bowling, and swimming. Making the announcement, Chef de Mission Joseph Amakali stated that the unveiling of Team Namibia reflects the dedication and resilience of the country's athletes, noting that those selected earned their places through consistent performance and commitment.
Speaking at the official announcement, Namibia National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association President Dr. Ndeulipula Hamutumwa congratulated the selected athletes. He acknowledged the vital role played by coaches, technical officials, sponsors, federations, government partners, and families in supporting the athletes on their journey, while calling on all Namibians to rally behind the team as preparations for Glasgow continue.
The team composition sees several notable adjustments across the codes. Twenty-six-year-old Ryan Williams will lead a four-man athletics team, which does not include any female athletes, a shift from Namibia's representation at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England. In para-athletics, Ananias Shikongo stands as the sole representative, with several established athletes absent from the roster.
Conversely, Namibia's boxing contingent has grown from two athletes at the 2022 Games to five for Glasgow, with Tryagain Morning Ndevelo retaining his place from the Birmingham Games. After missing the previous Commonwealth Games due to administrative disputes, Namibia's gymnastics team returns to the competition, while the bowling team will feature both male and female athletes. In the pool, Ronan Wantenaar is the only returning swimmer from the previous Games and will be joined by a group of newcomers.
At the last edition of the multi-sport event, Team Namibia secured four bronze medals in athletics and cycling. This year's Games will bring together approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories.
