Thirty-five years of informing, educating, and entertaining the nation. As the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) marks its anniversary, former members of the Sport Desk reflect on the development of sports broadcasting, their experiences, and its impact on public service media in Namibia.
When NBC transitioned from SWABC 35 years ago, a group of journalists and producers laid the foundation for sports broadcasting in Namibia. Among them was Rosa Hamukwaya, one of the first women to work in sports journalism, who focused on increasing visibility for women in sport.“So my goal was also to make the female voices, especially the sports one, come out just like any other sports. So for me, it really was the fondest memory,” Hamukwaya said.
Former Senior Sports Producer Deon Cloete began his NBC career in radio before moving into the television Sport Desk. He recalls the hurdles they faced in promoting public broadcasting at a time when many viewers preferred foreign television channels.“And I realized that a lot of people really doesn't know NBC. People are so used to watch South African television, foreign television, whatever,” Cloete said.
As NBC marks 35 years of service, the broadcaster's pioneers say the anniversary is not only a celebration of the institution, but also of the communities it continues to serve across the country. From the north to the south, east to west, NBC has remained a primary source of information, ensuring that even those in remote parts of Namibia stay connected.
