Otjinene Constituency Councillor Eben-ezer Kauapirura has highlighted the need to create a better understanding of the living conditions, needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities.

Kauapirura stressed the importance of identifying their needs and ensuring that they receive the support and services they require during the commemoration of the National Disability Day in Otjinene.

The councillor emphasised the importance of ensuring that persons with disabilities are fully included in society and not isolated from community activities.

"It is very necessary that at least we need to have this day here in Otjinene so that we can also database all our people that are living with disability in the Otjinene constituency as well as realise their needs, especially the basic needs.”

He noted that the event provides an opportunity for persons with disabilities to get together, engage with their communities, and make their voices heard.

"We need to make sure that we know those caregivers to advocate for their agenda when it comes to regional council meetings. We also need to know how many there are. They must also feel that they are accommodated in this society so that they can't only be kept home or left home whenever people are visiting towns or meeting new people. They must also be integrated into our daily life as well, and that is one of the reasons why we deemed it necessary that we need to organise it.”

Governor of Omaheke Region Pijoo Nganate also made a call to the regional leadership.

"My plea to the councillors is that on this specific day we commemorate it in all 7 constituencies so our people get the opportunity to come out of their houses. We also heard some suggestions here on the floor that, yes, the disabled people get an allowance from the government. But what about the person who is taking care of them? A valid point, because many of them can't go to work because it has become a full-time job that we need to consider."
