The executives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAFWLR) conducted a visit to the Oshikoto regional leadership as part of ongoing engagements to address water scarcity challenges affecting communities in that region.

Discussions focused on priority water sector projects, including the drilling and installation of new boreholes; cleaning of existing ones, as well as rehabilitation of pipelines; and construction of new earth dams, amongst others.

Akaonde Village in the Okankolo Constituency was highlighted by the Director of Water Supply and Sanitation Coordination, Pauline Mufeti, as one of the six critical hotspot areas requiring urgent attention before the end of July 2026.

"The Oshikoto region is one of the places that are affected by water scarcity and drought. The furthest pipeline is 10 km from this water point, and this infrastructure behind me was set up by the ministry to supply 5 to 6 villages in a radius of 10 km with water. But this water is salty and brackish, and we are planning to set up a desalination plant in order to improve drinking water and for livestock."

The plan is to improve water security and service delivery in the Oshikoto Region.
