The Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, has called on former Mathematics Olympiad participants to mentor young learners and champion STEM education across Namibia.

Speaking at the launch of the Namibia Mathematics Olympiad Alumni Association, Dr. Steenkamp said the initiative will strengthen collaboration, nurture young talent and support the country's transition to a knowledge-based economy.

Dr. Steenkamp described the launch of the Namibia Mathematics Olympiad Alumni Association as an important step in advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in Namibia.

She said the association will connect former Olympiad participants with current and future mathematics champions through mentorship, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

The minister commended former Olympiad participants for representing Namibia at continental and international competitions, saying their achievements have strengthened the country's human capital in STEM fields.

"STEM disciplines provide the tools but also the methodologies for modelling complex systems, automating processes, and generating actionable insights. And it's these tools that also support better resource allocation and targeted, efficient delivery of services. Lastly, ladies and gentlemen, STEM fosters international collaboration."

Dr. Steenkamp encouraged learners to embrace mathematics and science, saying the subjects are essential to Namibia's industrialisation, innovation and long-term competitiveness.

She also urged alumni to mentor young people in their communities, emphasising the importance of nurturing an interest in mathematics in primary school.

"So large multinational projects and STEM-related infrastructure create opportunities for our Namibian researchers to contribute to global solutions."

Speaking on behalf of the alumni, Fortune Shimbanda welcomed the establishment of the association, saying it will create opportunities for stronger networks and collaboration among former participants.

"To be part of the newly established Alumni Association fills me with great pride because I truly believe this is a wonderful step. It's a big step into the future, and it will open up new opportunities. It will allow us to build even stronger connections, and it will help us build forward."
