Andy Burnham officially becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, taking over from Keir Starmer at Number 10 Downing Street in London on Monday, July 20.

The handover sees Starmer formally tender his resignation to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace – with the monarch then inviting Burnham to form a new government.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester secured the Labour leadership after receiving the backing of over 323 of the party's 403 MPs, making it mathematically impossible for any rival to enter the contest.

Under the rules, Burnham becomes PM without needing to call a general election – or even a vote within his own party – leading to domestic media outlets accusing him of lacking a mandate to govern.
