Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa has announced a ten-million-dollar food/cash for work programme aimed at providing immediate income support while creating community assets in rural Namibia.

Sankwasa made this announcement during the opening of the 2026 Annual Rural Development Progress Review and Planning Workshop held at Swakopmund.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele, Sankwasa, said the programme responds to the country's high unemployment levels.

He added that the country's unemployment rate stands at 36.9%, with young people aged 15 to 34 the hardest hit. Youth unemployment stands at 44.1%.

"Although this programme is not a permanent solution to unemployment, it provides immediate income support, creates community assets and strengthens resilience among vulnerable households. We will continue advocating for increased resources so that more communities can benefit. I also wish to encourage stronger cooperation between the ministry and regional councils. We appreciate those who provide timely information and work closely with us. However, repeated follow-ups are still required in some cases. Effective planning and decision-making depend on accurate and timely information."
