Indonesia marked its 81st Independence Day celebrations in Windhoek on Monday under the theme 'Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.'
At the celebration, Indonesia's Ambassador to Namibia Mirza Nurhidayat reaffirmed the ties between the two countries.
“So, this independence is a very significant milestone for Indonesia as we move towards becoming a more developed country. At this moment, we would like to share our hope that the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Namibia will continue to grow from strength to strength in various fields and sectors of bilateral cooperation.”
He also thanked President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for her congratulatory message to Indonesia, explaining that it highlights the two countries' shared bilateral relations, which are rooted in de-colonisation, multilateral cooperation, and mutual respect.
The anniversary also seeks to reflect on the country's diplomatic relations with other countries around the world that have contributed to their economic and social development over the years.
“This independence is very meaningful for Indonesia. Eighty-one years is not a young age anymore, and we would like to become more independent in terms of our energy and food security, as well as other development priorities for Indonesia. We would also like to have the support of our friends, including Namibia.”
The Embassy’s Information and Socio-culture Officer, Alum Yathtiba explained.
“Our independence today is to show us that we are here at 81 years of independence, and we have to go strong together to make our people more prosperous.”
The Ambassador also led the hosting of the flag ceremony and read Indonesia's 1945 Proclamation of Independence.
The celebrations included the cutting of a rice cake, a tradition that symbolises gratitude, abundance, continuity, and respect.
