A mobile school unit that once followed livestock herders in the Epupa Constituency of the Kunene Region has been transformed into a permanent primary school.
This follows the construction of two new classroom blocks through a public-private partnership of Mega Catch Fishing and Projekt Kaokoland e.V.
The Okapara Primary School was officially inaugurated on Monday by Minister in the Presidency, Charles Mubita, marking the completion of a project aimed at improving access to education in the remote community.
Dr. Mubita said the school is an example of what can be achieved when the private sector partners with the government to address development needs.
"I am pleased to note that the construction of the Okapara Primary School is a manifestation of the aforementioned partnership of purpose and wish to commend Mega Catch Fishing, under the able leadership of Mr Nghaamwa, for the proactive effort in meeting the educational needs of this local community and thereby, supplementing government efforts."
He called on other Namibians with the capacity to partner with the government to deliver on developmental goals.
The Mega Catch Fishing Company director is Ricky Tjijenda.
"We have the Kunene region at heart, without discriminating against other regions, because we believe that the Kunene region is the most marginalised in the country and it is the region that we want to see prosper."
Projekt Kaokoland e.V. representative Andreas Horn said the initiative is part of a broader effort to support education and improve learning facilities for children and young people across Namibia.
"We are happy to say that we have organised more than 200 projects worth several million euros, for example, at the request of the Office of the President, the Ohajuua PS, Otjikojo PS and Otjimuru PS in our region for Namibia, for the children and young people, because they are the future of a country. And we hope that Okapara will also become a small lighthouse of education."
The school currently serves 68 learners from pre-primary to Grade 3, with four teachers.
