The husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, was buried in Zanzibar's Kizimkazi on Monday, just hours after his death at a hospital on the island.

Hassan's burial was according to Islamic rites, and mourners included senior government, political and religious figures.

Zanzibar Grand Mufti Sheikh Saleh Omar Kaabi led the funeral prayer. 

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi and Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba were among those attending.

Ndejembi announced Hassan's death earlier on Monday, saying he died at about 08:00 local time at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

According to a biography read at the funeral, Hassan spent much of his career in Zanzibar's agricultural sector. He worked at the Ministry of Agriculture until retiring from government service in 2005, before going on to teach at Kizimbani Agricultural College.

Hassan married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, and they had four children. 

He became Tanzania's first First Gentleman when Samia assumed the presidency in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli.
