A family from Etope, Omulonga Constituency in the Ohangwena Region is calling for an investigation following the deaths of a woman and her unborn baby at Eenhana District Hospital last week.

The family of 39-year-old Johanna Naapopye Hekandjo held a media briefing in Eenhana on Tuesday, alleging negligence by medical personnel.

According to the family, Hekandjo was admitted to the hospital on 28 August 2026 while experiencing severe labour pains. They allege that she remained in labour for three days before she died on the morning of Sunday, 30 August. Her unborn baby boy also died.

The family suspects that negligence by medical personnel may have contributed to the deaths. They claim that Hekandjo arrived at the hospital in time to receive medical assistance but was allegedly not given the necessary intervention.

The relatives believe that a Caesarean section could have been performed to save Hekandjo and her baby. They are now calling on the Minister of Health and Social Services to launch an investigation and provide clear answers on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The family said it was dissatisfied with the medical report provided to them, which reportedly stated that the cause of death was unknown.

Efforts to obtain comment from the hospital proved futile.
