Liberation struggle icon Helao Shityuwete was buried at the Pioneerspark Cemetery in Windhoek.

Before his burial, a state memorial service was held at Parliament Gardens where mourners reflected on his life and sacrifices.

Mourners from diverse backgrounds gathered with the family of the late Shityuwete to pay their respects.

The widow, Jane, narrated their life together and his suffering as a political prisoner at Robben Island. 

The late Shityuwete's daughter, Tulimelila, described her father as her "North Star" – a guiding light whose presence shaped her life.

Former Robben Island political prisoners who shared the premises also had a moment of reflection.

Former Presidents Hifikepunye Pohamba and Nangolo Mbumba's tributes were delivered by the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi.

And after the tributes came the final farewell.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Vice President Lucia Witbooi were there for a final goodbye.

The President paid tribute to Shityuwete's contribution to the country, honouring a generation whose sacrifices helped pave the way for Namibia's independence.

Shityuwete's coffin was lowered with full military honours and a 13-gun salute.
