The Ministry of Health and Social Services is assessing the need for additional maternal shelters in areas where expectant mothers travel long distances and wait near health facilities before giving birth.

Health Minister Dr Esperance Luvindao said in response to a question from UDF MP Nico Somaeb that the ministry is aware of the need for maternal accommodation in several areas and has approached partners to help finance new shelters.

Somaeb raised concerns about expectant mothers camping near health facilities while waiting to give birth, particularly with the rainy season approaching.

Luvindao noted that one of the areas raised by Somaeb already has a maternal shelter. She will seek further information on why mothers are staying outside the facility and whether the existing shelter has sufficient capacity.

In another area, the minister confirmed that the ministry has received repeated requests for a maternal shelter and is working with partners to explore funding for the project.
