The Hompa of the Mbunza Traditional Authority, Alfons Kaundu, has voiced his concerns regarding the diminishing presence of culture and tradition within communities.

The remarks were made during the Heritage Week Celebration held at Sivara Senior Primary School in Kavango West Region.

Hompa Kaundu observed that many people have moved away from their traditional ways of living and fully embraced a Western lifestyle, resulting in the loss of cultural identity.

He highlighted traditional practices of the Mbunza people, including how marriages were conducted and how newborn children were named in accordance with family lineage and customary beliefs.

He further explained that in Mbunza culture, it is not customary for children to attend burial ceremonies.

Hompa Kaundu also raised concern that some community members are no longer familiar with proper conduct and protocol when visiting the traditional palace.

"Let us adhere to our culture. It is essential that we learn about our traditions and practices. There is no one who truly despises their culture; even if friends disapprove, it remains a part of who you are. Take, for example, the Himba tribe; despite governmental pressures, they have steadfastly upheld their cultural identity. Cultural attire is not simply for admiration. Just look at how splendid I appear! In our culture, this is the attire of a Hompa, known as 'Awindo'. There should be a difference between a Hompa and his people."

He appealed to elders to set a good example for the younger generation by refraining from consuming alcohol in the presence of children and encouraged those with knowledge of cultural dances and songs to teach the youth correctly.

The Heritage Week Celebration featured displays of Kavango traditional food, traditional tools and equipment, indigenous games, cultural attire and dance.
