Behind every breast cancer survivor is a story of courage and resilience.

The NBC spoke to a Keetmanshoop cancer survivor, Welhelmina Kaptein, who says her faith in God gave her the strength to overcome breast cancer.

The 79-year-old Kaptein was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago.

As part of the treatment, she was operated in 2019.

Recalling those difficult moments before her operation, Kaptein said she drew strength from the Almighty to carry her through and remain strong for her six children.

"I placed this illness in the hands of the lord. I have children and grandchildren, and there are still people I need to take care of. Up until today I am taking care of two elderly people and my children. God helped me; he heard my prayers and gave me the strength to remain strong."

Another breast cancer survivor is Adri Coetzee.

Dr Coetzee said that reliable statistics on newly diagnosed breast cancer cases in the region are limited, making it difficult to establish the actual prevalence and burden of the disease.

However, she warned that low reported cases do not necessarily mean breast cancer is not a problem.

"Our priority should be to identify women with breast cancer as early as possible and ensure that they can access the necessary diagnostic investigation and treatment."

She further explained that breast cancer does not always cause pain; however, big, hard lumps are some of the warning signs.

Dr Coetzee urged women to look for changes in breast size, shape, skin around nipples and swelling under the arms.

"Younger women can also develop breast cancer, even if they have no family history of the disease. In fact, most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history or known inherited genetic risk factors. We must therefore be careful not to create the impression that breast cancer only affects older women. Women of all ages should be aware of the risks and the importance of early detection."

Women are encouraged to visit their nearest clinics for breast examinations and assessments.
