Namibia recorded a memorable outing at the 2026 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Marathon in Pretoria, South Africa, highlighted by Lavinia Haitope’s victory in the women’s 21.1-kilometre race and a clean podium sweep by the country's para-athletes.

Staged against the backdrop of the iconic Union Buildings under the theme "Africa United," the event brought together athletes from across Southern Africa to compete in the 21.1-kilometre half marathon, 10-kilometre, and 5-kilometre races, alongside an invitation-only one-mile event for athletes with disabilities.

Haitope delivered a standout performance to claim top honors in the women’s 21.1-kilometre half marathon, securing a major victory for Namibia in a highly competitive regional field.

Namibia’s success was further cemented in the para-athletics event, where the national contingent swept all three podium positions. Roodly Gowaseb claimed first place, followed by Kharuxab Nico in second and Mateus Angula in third.

Kavango West Region athletics coach Simon Nkumbwa commended the team's discipline and execution, emphasizing the strength and consistency of the nation's para-athletics program on the continental stage.

In addition to elite athletic performances, the event highlighted regional unity, inclusion, and sports diplomacy. AUSC Region 5 CEO Stanley Mutoya noted that the marathon serves as a key platform to foster regional cooperation and expand competitive opportunities for athletes of all abilities across Southern Africa.

Namibia concluded its campaign in Pretoria with the women’s half-marathon title and a dominant performance in para-athletics, marking a successful display at the regional championship.
