The National Arts Council of Namibia (NACN) has encouraged local creatives to apply for funding opportunities designed to develop their talents, expand their reach and create sustainable livelihoods within the creative industry.
Following the closure of its latest funding application cycle in October, the National Arts Council is preparing for the next phase, expected to begin in early February 2027. The council offers various funding programmes to support artists, students and other professionals in the creative sector.
Grant Officer Paul Simataa explained.
"We are here to support local creatives through various funding programmes that help nurture their creativity and take their talents to greater heights. The Council is responsible for administering grant cycles and bursary programmes, through which we fund students who wish to further their studies in arts-related fields. We also offer mobility funding to enable artists to travel internationally, showcase their work and gain exposure on the global stage."
Simataa said the Council recorded successful beneficiaries across all multidisciplinary arts categories, reflecting encouraging progress in the sector.
However, limited awareness remains a challenge, with many artists still unaware of the support available to them.
"This is why advocacy and outreach initiatives are important to ensure that the message reaches all 14 regions.
A beneficiary, Witlog Kamatoto, commended the council for support.
He initially received N$8,000 before registering his company, after which the support increased to N$75,000.
He is also preparing to host an exhibition this month, where he plans to showcase more of his work.
Kamatoto encouraged other artists to register with the Council and take advantage of the available funding opportunities to develop their talents and businesses.
He added that the inspiration behind one of his striking artworks is bringing together different cultural and natural elements to represent unity.
