Residents of the Otjimuhaka village in the Kunene Region will no longer be vulnerable to crocodile attacks after the Ondjongo Fishing and Product Company installed a water pump cylinder.
The pump works with a solar panel and filter system to make water fit for both human and livestock consumption.
The intervention follows incidents of crocodile attacks on humans and livestock along the river in recent years.
In a speech read on behalf of the Ondjongo Fishing and Product company's Managing Director, Junias Kaeundja, Private Secretary to the Director of Planning and Development in the Kunene Regional Council, stated that the project will prevent conflict between humans and crocodiles.
"Ondjongo Fishing and Product PTY Limited bought the materials to provide the residents with water by laying pipes in order to pump water from the Kunene river with the water pump cylinders using solar panels and putting up tanks. This project was completed to the tune of N$80,000 as a sustainable conflict solution between humans and crocodiles," Kauendja added.
Speaking on behalf of the Kunene Governor, Opuwo Rural Constituency Councilor, Western Muharukua noted that the government is committed to providing the nation with basic services, but due to the high demand versus limited resources, it is impossible in some cases. "The government of the Republic of Namibia is committed to providing basic services such as water to its citizens. However, the rate at which the government responds to the needs is constrained by high demand for development needs and limited resources. On the other hand, the government is challenged with the responsibility of creating a conducive environment for investment and business activities in the country. In that regard, I'm pleased to learn that one of those Namibian bona fide companies, in the name of Ondjongo fishing company, came to the rescue of our community that is in need of portable water."
