Stakeholders in the maritime sector have been called to adopt, adhere to, and conform to standards, policies, and guidelines to modernize and upgrade maritime education.
The Vice-Chairperson of the Board of the Namibian Maritime and Fisheries Institute, Sharon Neumbo, made this call during the stakeholders' engagement meeting at Walvis Bay.
Neumbo says the maritime educational fraternity has evolved internationally and nationally over the past few years.
She says NAMFI has introduced a new course aimed at equipping trainee groups with the knowledge to implement the occupational safety and health provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, on board fishing vessels.
"NAMFI, therefore, appeals to all stakeholders to see how you can contribute financially or donate any other training equipment needed by Namfi workshops, as in disgorged vessel machinery, diving suits, parts, tools, industrial paints, study materials, and sponsorships for students in these new diploma programs, as registration with NTA is on-going and may take a while to come to fruition."
